A thrilling diversion from a tough day at work ...

Monday was a tough day at work. I found myself in a situation which in 33 years of teaching I have never been in before. Everything has been sorted, my colleagues are very supportive and it isn’t really a problem, but it has unnerved me.

I can’t, through these pages, say what the issue was, but it has left me feeling frustrated, angry and upset.

Last night, as a diversion, we watched a streamed DVD from LoveFilm. Yes, after a few emails back and forth, Tim managed to get the system to work. We also think the streaming option will work out cheaper. Currently we pay £13.47 for a package of unlimited DVD’s, three at a time + streaming, whereas the streaming only package is less that £7.00. We haven’t yet found the ‘catch’, but it's probably there in the microscopic print!

I can thoroughly recommend ‘UNKNOWN’ starring Liam Neeson. I won’t spoil the film by giving away too much of the plot but it is a real thriller. You can view a trailer here.

  1. My heart goes out to you, Gaynor. I left teaching after a series of 'incidents' which left me wondering where we had gone so badly wrong as a society, so you have my FULL sympathy..

  3. Gaynor, I can only guess that it had to do with aggressive and unrespectful youngsters ... like there are so many nowadays. But whatever it was, don't let it get to you! I admire teachers for their courage, commitment, patience and strive. I could never muster all those qualities! Take care. Martine

  4. Sorry for your troubles and stress. I have no doubt you are a great teacher and have done so much for many students.
That looks like a great movie and I didn't know about Love Films. We usually watch on Sky and once in a great while will pay for a movie, but usually wait till it's free. I do love a good movie.

  5. Gaynor I am sorry about the news but I am glad it has been sorted. I can only guess what you might have gone through where parents and children are concerned. Its behind you, relax and try to forget. Take care and keep warm. Diane

  6. So sorry to hear about your incident - I can only use my imagination as to what it was but I bet we are all thinking along the same lines.
It's a shame that when you get to the time of life when you are at your peak in terms of experience and competence, something happens to knock you sideways and make you wonder what it has all been for. Which is a very good question.
I'm so glad what ever it was has been sorted because all too often good professionals have their lives turned upside down by something like this. You have my greatest sympathy too. Teachers deserve a medal for the c**p they have to put up with these days.

  7. I've often been tempted to join Love Films -- but suspect that I'd probably end up not watching the films I was getting! You would not believe the number of DVD's I've still not watched -- I have this mentality of 'saving them for another day' -- go figure!! Sorry you've had a nasty experience teaching -- the classroom and the profession are challenging places to be and the situation for teachers seems to get worse all the time. You have my greatest sympathy...

  8. Martine, Jane, Diane, Jean and Broad,

Thank you all for your comments. Your concern and reassuring words are very much appreciated. I really can't go into details but suffice to say that your guesses are along the right lines. I've now tried put it behind me and moved on. Wallowing in self pity for too long really isn't my style, and I refuse to let this incident dampen my enthusiasm for the rewarding parts of my job!

Go to your previous post. Read and Hear. Every cloud has a silver lining. Bon courage. Be N.I.C.E. Although not the correct latin quote the initials of the phrase spells thus. It was carried with me in the educational world! Probably useful in other careers too! Bon courage!

  11. I'm very sorry to hear you've been involved in something nasty. Teachers seem to have to deal with a lot these days. It makes one fear for the future of the profession.

  12. My husband has just retired after 36 years at his last school so whilst I don't have first-hand knowledge of your pain, I do have empathy. Sending you lots of warm wishes from Australia.
